NAMI’s Commitment to Recovery
“NAMI is committed to the health and well-being of persons living with mental illness. As part of that commitment, NAMI advocates to ensure appropriate access to treatment and supports that promote recovery.”
How can you make a difference in mental health funding? Tell your elected officials your personal story in a brief paragraph or two (including the real possibility of recovery when mental health funding is available). Use facts to support your requests. Facts and information are available on the NAMI Web site at www.nami.org (use the search function or go to Inform Us, then About Public Policy). If you can’t find what you need, email Angela Kimball at firstname.lastname@example.org. We can make a difference in state and local decisions if we become involved. Phone calls and e-mails from citizen advocates can change the course of issues directly affecting mental health funding.
If you are a NAMI member you can sign up for legislative alerts through their website: www.nami.org. NAMI’s website has a Legislative Action Center which makes responding to their alerts simple. NAMI Oregon and NAMI Mid-Valley will send you important legislative alerts as well. (www.nami.org/oregon or www.nami.org/sites/NAMI-MidValley)
If you don’t have the time to personalize a letter to your legislator, it’s just a mouse click away to let your representatives know that you are supporting/opposing a bill on the state or local level. Phone calls are effective as well.
To contact your local legislators: The e-mail address of legislators is rep. or sen., followed by first and last names without a space, followed by: @ state.or.us.
